Perkins IV

I really think there should be a forum for sharing ideas about using Perkins IV money. There is definately more red tape to deal with, or if you prefer a more positive remark, you definately have to me more creative in explaining how you want to use the funding. Let us here at COP know what's being done around the nation.

Julie, you may want to start another community for Perkins ideas only.

Myself, I'm very curious about concurrent credits, dual credits and certification programs.

Here are some things we've done here locally related to our program:

  • We've Begun creating a curriculum for the study of embryonic development in livestock. We were able to purchase an ultrasound machine and we are wanting to create some sort of certification for using ultrasound equipment to determine pregnancy. That's where we're stuck though... there's no such certification.
  • Ag Literacy in and out of the Classroom - A student developed newsletter for alumni and friends of the program. Perkins pays for software and printing costs.
  • Total Station surveying equipment to enhance geometry scores across all of our programs of study.

Now, what are you doing?

Re: Perkins IV

Last summer (07), in Arkansas we went through each of our ag class frameworks and identified which objectives could use geometry. We identified each geometry objective that could be used in any ag application. (perimeter, area, volume, etc. etc.) I used this information to write a proposal to buy a plasma cam system. I wrote in the grant that the geometry class would come to the ag building and see practical geomoety being used and I wrote that my student who were in ag and geometry would develop a better understanding of "book geomoetry" by seeing and using it in the ag mech lab.

I like your newsletter idea for literacy.

Tell me where I can find information about the Total Station survey equipment.

Thanks, John

Re: Perkins IV

A whole new community for Perkins is definitely doable. I'll keep an eye on this thread, and if it is active, then we'll consider opening up a community. It would be great if we could get someone who is very knowledgable about the ins and outs of dealing with Perkins who would be willing to give regular tidbits and ideas for those out there who are slogging through it every day. If anyone is interested, please let me know! jfritsch.naae@uky.edu

Lee, I would be VERY interested in finding out more about the surveying equipment, as well as the ins & outs of Perkins funding. A forum for Perkins is an excellent idea.
