Ideas for a Leadership/Officer Retreat?

Anyone have any great ideas of plans for an FFA officer retreat? We usually take one in the summer and plan the year, but also organize committees, go to an amusement park, and complete an agriculture tour. I am looking for some fun leadership ideas or teambuilding ideas to do with an officer team to spice up my retreat. Any help would be appreciated.

Jennifer,
Have you ever thought about a high or low ropes course? They can be great team-building and leadership activites, and the kids love the physical aspect. My husband does this every year for his officer retreat, and it always goes over great. If you've never seen one, here's a website about one in NC that has good pictures. http://www.xtreemechallenge.com/ I bet there is probably one somewhere near you.

Re: Ideas for a Leadership/Officer Retreat?

Jennifer,

I'm sure I stole this idea from someone else, but we name our initial officer gathering a "charge", not a "retreat." Retreat means to go backwards; charge means to go forward.

Our charge involves brainstorming around a fire about what the FFA can do for its members and community. This leads to goal setting and then to activity planning. One unique thing that we do is allow the officers time around the fire without the advisors present so they may have some frank discussions among themselves about what they expect from each other during the upcoming year. All of this keeps the ownership of the chapter with the members.

A great team building exercise I use with my students is to develop a meal together. I give them a certain amount of money and turn them lose as a team in Walmart. I tell them that the meal must be homemade, something everyone likes and must stay within budget. Then the officers have to make the meal, set the table, and clean up. I give NO help. The kids really enjoy it. Words of wisdom --- stash some snacks aside for yourself in case the meal doesnt turn out!
