Golf Course Management/Sports Turf Management Class Ideas

Does anyone teach golf course management/sports turf management? I am looking for anything to help develop a class including unit plans, instructional materials, project ideas, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Golf Course Management/Sports Turf Management Class Ideas

I have taught a Turf Grass Management class the last two years. It has been challenging and fun at the same time. The first year, my class was in charge of preparing the football field for games - painting the lines (I am at a small school and my class was mostly football players). This year we just helped winterize the irrigation system on the football field. I try and take them on a trip to a golf course one day after the golf unit. Some units of instruction can include:

  • Principles of Biology
  • General Chemistry
  • Fundamentals of Physics
  • Introduction to Crop Science
  • General Soils
  • Introduction to Turfgrass Management
  • Pest Management Strategies for Turf
  • Commercial Turf Maintenance and Production
  • Soil Fertility Principles
  • Weed Science
  • Introductory Plant Pathology
  • Plant Physiology
  • Principles of Entomology
  • Design of Irrigation Systems
  • Sports Turf Management

Re: Golf Course Management/Sports Turf Management Class Ideas

I hope to split my Turf and Landscaping class into Turfgrass Managment and a Landscaping course in a year or so.

I like the Landscape Lawn Care & Golf Course Managment CD from the National Council for Ag Ed. Very worthwhile CD Great units, information, and I have also used it as a 'independent study' course for one student.

Iowa State University has a good turfgrass program and their students have been first for several years at some National contests. www.hort.iastate.edu/turfgrass/

This is an area I need to start getting into as some partnerships are developing with our sports facility and also with the city Parks and Rec, who are putting up a new sports complex out my back door at the school.

I look forward to finding more good ideas here for Sports Turf management.
