Landscaping Software

I'm looking at purchasing some kind of CAD/Landscaping Software for my semester long landscaping course. I'd prefer something simple and easy to use (since this course is only one semester) and in color. I've heard of some types of software that allow students to see the "growth potential" of plants, so they can see what a landscape would look like years from now, using certain plants. I'd also like to maybe have a 3-D option but plan view would be okay.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Lori Hoppe (MT)

Re: Landscaping Software

When I started teaching, my school already had some software purchased. I had no part in selecting it and have no idea what it cost. I do really like the program and I have done many "landscapes" with a downloaded picture. The software is called PROLandscape by drafix.com. I tihnk it would do everything you could want it to do and it is not hard to learn. The cost is a little high (I think), the website said around $1,300. This would mean you could put it on one computer at a time - not great for the classroom setting.

I have also seen cheaper programs on a rack at Walmart, you could probably buy many copies of these for an affordable price. I don't know good these are. Good luck!

Re: Landscaping Software

I know that Landscaping software is very pricey. NAAE does offer a grant that in the past has helped purchased CAD software for several schools. I would recommend that you consider applying for a grant so that you could at least get part of the software paid for. The grant is the NAAE/American Nursery and Landscape Instruction Grant. It is a matching grant for $650. It may help out a little. Also, if you are interested in any other type of nursery or landscaping project, this grant could possibly help you fund it. All the specifics are listed in the application.

Good Luck! Applications are due to NAAE by May 15, 2008.

You can find an application at: http://www.naae.org/awards/applications/#D

Re: Landscaping Software
The landscape design software that our school recently purchased is called Realtime Landscaping Pro from IDEA Spectrum. (If you google that, you should find their website). The cost is relatively cheap ($99) and there are educational discounts. The program is easy to use and there are some really cool features with it. You can also update photos of a property and add designs to it. It also has a cool walk through feature. My students really enjoy using it.

Re: Landscaping Software
Does this software allow you to search the plant library by characteristics? and does the $99 price only allow you to install on 1 computer or many computers? I couldn't find the answers on their website.

Re: Landscaping Software

I use ProLandscape and I would recommend it. Highly technical, but easy to get started using it also. They do update fairly frequently, but they will work with you on a site license for just a little more than the price earlier quoted.

I would recommend talking with Drafix on their software.
