This is a shop safety contract that is modified from the one used at the University of Central Missouri. I will have students and their parents sign it this year before they are allowed in the shop. I did not do this last year, so I would like some opinions on it. Do you think it would hold water if there was ever a suit over an injured student? Does anyone do something similar? Ag Mechanics is one of my favorite areas to teach, but the liability issue maked me nervous, especially with the small shop I have.

I don't know if this will hold up against a lawsuit but I know that it is always good practice to have one on file. I had one similar to this that I used except it was centered around working in the greenhouse. The main thing that I would make sure of is that you get the student and the parent to sign it. I would also recommend letting your Principal look over it to see if he/she would add anything. Another good thing to do is to go over safety before you enter the shop and have each student take a shop safety test. Don't let any student into the shop unless they make a 90% or above or whatever number suits you best. You can give students the option to retake the exam if they don't make the grade but I would limit the number of times you allow to retake it. Also keep those tests on file in your office along with a medical release form and the signed contract so if something happens you can access them very quickly.

I agree with Alissa except you really need to have the students earn 100% on the test. I want 100% safety.
