Ideas for Recruitment of AG Teachers

I am getting ready to teach a workshop to FFA members about becoming an Agricultural Education teacher at our State FFA Convention.  Instead of reinventing the wheel, I thought I would ask for your ideas and what you have done to recruit your students into our field.  So let me know what has worked best for you in this area.  Much appreciated!

Re: Ideas for Recruitment of AG Teachers

We followed a neat idea that Missouri had.  Each teacher nominated two students and we sent personalized invitations (it was invitation only) to them, thier parents, etc.  Then had a presentation at State Convention, T-shirts, etc.  It went over well.  Contact Brian F. in Iowa, as he has more of the information. (Or Missouri, where we got it from)

Re: Ideas for Recruitment of AG Teachers

Colorado had an event that took students identified by their teachers a future teachers and fed them supper, had a program, made a big deal out of it. Contact Kenton Oschner. Montana's Dr. Igo from MSU had the teachers identify students they thought would make a good teacher, at convention those students were brought on stage and recognized (SURPRISE!), and Dr. Igo played a slide show of all the teachers behind them to illustrate how important all the teachers are to all the attendees. He now has doubled his freshmen enrollment for the fall.

Re: Ideas for Recruitment of AG Teachers

During out state convention ag teachers presented a similar recruitment workshop as well.  We encouraged teachers to send their best sophomores and juniors to the workshop regardless of their current professional interests.

We followed the theme "Do what you love, love what you do" and based the workshop on what we called the "Top Three Reasons to be an Ag Teacher."  We began by having every person draw out their favorite story about their ag teacher and then share their tales with others.  We then went into our "top three reasons":

- Be an Influence in the Agriculture Industry

- Make a Difference for Someone

- Have Fun!

We based an activity or included a personal example on each keypoint.  The students enjoyed the workshop and we left with more than a few who were considering ag education as an option for them that hadn't considered it before hand.

These are just some ideas and of course there are many reasons you could go into.  I think the real key to this is not so much as to try to sell them on the idea but rather just plant it!
